GAIENMAE: Isomiya Tempura... I'm hooked on this massive Tempura lunch set! Mom&Pop shop

A few weeks back I had a forgettable greasy experience here for the Tempura "Ten-Don" bowl with the each piece of tempura dipped in sauce then placed on a bowl of rice.  It just didn't work for me.

This day I arrived exactly at 11:30am to avoid... 

... to avoid all the smokers who love to eat here!

Lots of sake bottles on keep... guess they have a nice dinner following.

The photo doesn't do it justice but I'm sure there were 10+ different kinds of tempura and the rice was gigantic!  

One giant shrimp, squid, fish, a round tempura with lots of little shrimps and a whole bunch of veggies.

Yup, a huge portion of rice!  Never can finish this.

Add the grated white radish to the sauce.

One big hot tea per person :)

Lots of little shrimp tempura.

For 1,000yen this place really can't be beat and you will be incredibly stuffed.  Just be aware of the smokers that puff away during the lunch rush.

GAIENMAE: Isomiya Tempura... mom and pop shop left me all greasy~

I occasionally go exploring during lunch and away from any major roads in a somewhat residential area there stood this tiny Tempura shop that was filled with lunch goers.  Had to give it a try!

The menu.  Seems most people were going for the regular tempura set or the ten-don (tempura bowl)

Sat at the counter shoulder to shoulder with an older 50's clientele.

900yen!  It took a little while for this to arrive because of the lunch rush. The elderly husband was making the tempura and his wife grabbed the hot tempura with her hands and placed them on the plates.  Must be sooooo hot... ouch.

1 piece of Shrimp and 1 fish...mostly veggies.  Even a tiny corn tempura.

Free tea.

After my lunch I just felt super greasy... I guess its a hit and miss sometimes.

EBISU: Tempura Tenya! Nice picture menus but was a the shrimp tempura bowl was limp and soggy.

Doesn't the tempura look so plump and crispy in this photo!

But this is what arrived... kinda skinny soggy limp tempura's. I think its quite unusual for Japanese restaurants to veer this far from the actual menu photo.  Nothing was crispy and there was an oily soggy flavor to the dish.  I should have gone for Afuri nearby. 

Overall its a skip... If you really want an huge crispy plate of Tempura then you gotta venture towards the new 2020 Tokyo Olympic Station to mom and pop shop  Isomiya Tempura!  https://tokyobelly.blogspot.com/search?q=isomiya  Oh, lots of posh cars in Ebisu... gotta like to color combination of the Bentley Bentayga.
